Still marching to change the world

20 October 2025

Local 800 at the 2025 World March of Women

Last Saturday, thousands of women set out for Québec City. Buses from every region of the province converged on the capital for the same event: the World March of Women, held on October 18, 2025, under the theme “Still marching to change the world.”

Thirty years after the historic Bread and Roses march, the beating heart of the feminist movement came alive once again in the streets of Québec City. Among the roughly 16,000 participants were activists, workers, students, mothers, and allies and a proud, united delegation from Local 800, flags and signs held high.

Marching for equality, again and again

The Coordination du Québec de la Marche mondiale des femmes (CQMMF) had prepared a day that was both festive and determined: a gathering at the Place de l’Assemblée nationale, participatory activities, inspiring speeches, and a collective march through the capital’s streets.

Throughout the day, chants echoed: “Not one more!”, “Equality now!”, and “So, so, so, solidarity with women around the world!”

Local 800 marched to denounce the poverty that still disproportionately affects women, to combat gender-based and sexual violence, and to demand a world that is fairer, more united, and more feminist.

As Magali Picard, President of the FTQ, reminded the crowd: “The history of the labour movement is also a history of women who fight, organize, and change the world, one struggle at a time.”

Vigilance as a collective duty

Participants also emphasized that hard-won gains can quickly erode. Looking south, where fundamental rights such as abortion have been called into question, many reminded us that nothing can be taken for granted and that our rights only stand if we defend them together.

At Local 800, this message resonates deeply. In our workplaces, we know that true equality is built day by day, through recognition, solidarity, and collective action.

Forward, together

La marche s’est terminée dans une ambiance d’énergie et de fraternité. Les visages souriants, les The march ended in an atmosphere of energy and camaraderie. Smiling faces, raised signs, and united voices reminded everyone that beyond individual struggles, it is the strength of the collective that moves history forward.

“We will continue to march, to speak out, and to stand up to anyone who would turn back the clock. Because together, we are still marching to change the world.”
— Marie Deschênes, Acting President, Local 800

Local 800 wishes to commend the remarkable work of the CQMMF organizers and to thank everyone who took part in this historic day.
