What CNESST cutbacks mean for you
12 September 2025
François Legault’s government insists it will not back down on hard-won gains and that CNESST services will be preserved. Yet the organization, which must eliminate 250 jobs (equivalent to 5% of its workforce), anticipates service delays and disruptions.
We will take the government at its word, but we will still document the concrete impacts experienced by our members in order to demand corrective action when needed.
Why this situation particularly affects women
Over the next two years, more than 23,000 employers will have to meet their pay equity obligations. The planned cuts to CNESST services are likely to extend delays and slow down corrective measures that workers have been waiting for years to see implemented.
This impact falls directly on women workers, many of whom are in precarious, non-unionized jobs. What is at stake is not only their individual situations but also the collective gains won through long and difficult struggles. These gains were meant to protect all workers, especially the most vulnerable.
What lies ahead in the coming months
- Longer delays in processing complaints and pay equity investigations
- Fewer compliance audits of employers
And all this comes at a time when the cost of living is skyrocketing and teams are already chronically understaffed. Workers are being asked to do more and more with less. Cutting back on an organization that prevents, monitors, compensates, and enforces the rules weakens the last line of defense protecting health, safety, and rights at work.
What we are going to do, together
- Document delays to measure their real impact on your cases
- Join our voices with other unions calling for an end to cuts that threaten prevention, monitoring, and compensation
- Most importantly, we’ll remain by your side
Despite these imposed cuts, we will continue to provide you with the best possible service, follow up as needed, and support every member so that you feel the least possible impact of these decisions.
If you are facing unreasonable delays with your claims, please let us know. Together, we can assess the possibility of intervening or escalating the case to the appropriate authorities.
Because behind every case, there are people, families, and rights that matter. And that, we will never let go.
