The FTQ observes the Day of Mourning for workers killed or injured on the job
Montréal, April 28, 2025 – The Quebec Federation of Labour (QFL) is observing the Day of Mourning for workers killed or injured on the job this April 28. Once again, we must denounce the unacceptably high number of workplace accident and illness victims. In 2024, 246 workers lost their lives while performing their jobs, 36 more than in 2023.
“Once again this year, the world of work is in mourning. We cannot understand why our governments continue to turn a deaf ear to workers’ demands for better workplace protections. We cannot repeat it often enough: prevention must be at the heart of our priorities,” says QFL General Secretary Denis Bolduc.
“Two hundred and forty-six deaths is the highest number recorded in the past ten years. For the FTQ, the more things change, the more they stay the same. In 2021, the CAQ government imposed a new occupational health and safety regime that was supposed to prioritize prevention, but we are still waiting for the preventive mechanisms meant to protect workers to be fully implemented. How many more victims will it take for this government to finally wake up?” asks the General Secretary.
The QFL, Quebec’s largest central labour body, represents over 600,000 workers.
