Supporting our values through our choices: prioritizing Quebec companies

27 February 2025

The closure of Amazon’s seven warehouses in Quebec, resulting in the loss of at least 3,500 jobs, has sparked both outrage and reflection. This decision, widely seen as a direct response to workers’ unionization efforts, highlights a troubling reality: major online retailers willing to sacrifice jobs to suppress employee rights.

In light of this situation, the Service Employees’ Union, Local 800 (SEU 800), encourages its members and all Quebecers to choose local alternatives for their online purchases.

Our purchasing decisions have an impact far beyond a simple transaction. They influence the local economy, job security, and working conditions. By prioritizing Quebec businesses, we help strengthen our economic fabric and protect quality jobs right here at home.

This closure is not just a business decision—it underscores the importance of decent work, a healthy work environment, and respect for employee rights. Unionization is not a threat but a vital tool for securing fair and safe working conditions.

In line with its values, SEU 800 is immediately ceasing all purchases through the Amazon platform for its professional needs and encourages its members and partners to favor local, responsible alternatives that respect workers’ rights for their online shopping.

SEU 800 stands in solidarity with the workers affected by this closure.
