December 6: Remember to act
6 December 2024
On December 6, SEU-800 commemorates the victims of the tragic attack at Montreal’s Polytechnique in 1989. This act of misogynistic violence took the lives of 14 young women and left an indelible mark on the history of Quebec and Canada.
Today, we remember Geneviève Bergeron, Hélène Colgan, Nathalie Croteau, Barbara Daigneault, Anne-Marie Edward, Maud Haviernick, Maryse Laganière, Maryse Leclair, Anne-Marie Lemay, Sonia Pelletier, Michèle Richard, Annie St-Arneault, Annie Turcotte and Barbara Klucznik-Widajewicz. These promising and talented women were torn from their families and their dreams because of their gender.
As we honour their memory, we also reaffirm our commitment to the fight against violence against women, an issue that is still omnipresent in our societies.
A call to action
It is imperative to continue to :
- Educate and raise awareness about the causes and consequences of gender-based violence.
- Support victims by providing accessible and adapted resources, shelters and services.
- Collaborate to denounce and eradicate sexist and discriminatory behaviour.
We invite everyone to join in the commemoration, this Friday, December 6, from 12 noon to 1:30 p.m., at Place du 6 décembre 1989 (at the intersection of Chemin Queen-Mary and Avenue Decelles, in the Côte-des-Neiges district). Here’s the link to the commemoration’s Facebook post. We invite you to participate in building a world where women can live free from all forms of violence. This tragedy must remain a poignant reminder of the importance of equality, respect and justice.
Together, let us continue the fight for a violence-free future.
The SEU 800 union remains united and committed to this essential cause.
