Service Employees International Union (SEIU) Convention

29 May 2024

From May 19 to 22, the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) convention was held in Philadelphia, attracting some 3,000 delegates and guests. The SEU 800 Executive Committee was there to represent the members of our union.

Some may ask, “Why a delegation from SEU 800 at this convention? Because SEU 800 is a local of the Service Employees International Union (SEIU), representing nearly 2 million members in Canada, the U.S. and Puerto Rico. It is the largest union in North America.

At the head of the SEIU for almost 14 years, Mary Kay Henry passed the torch for her well-deserved retirement. Delegates overwhelmingly elected April Verrett as International President of the SEIU. This makes her the first black woman to lead the union in its 103-year history.

Our President, Cristina Cabral, was elected to the International Union’s “Executive Council” to represent the interests of SEU members in Quebec.

Delegates heard from Kamala Harris, Vice-President of the United States, and Justin Trudeau, Prime Minister of Canada. Our President had the opportunity to speak with Mr. Trudeau to discuss issues of concern to members, such as the situation of temporary foreign workers and the environment.
As in any union convention, delegates decided on the Union’s orientations for the next 4 years. Here are the resolutions adopted:

The SEU 800 delegation left the convention inspired, motivated and with plenty of ideas for continuing our union’s progress.
