Press release
February – Black History Month

3 February 2023

Black History Month is celebrated across Canada. It is dedicated to sharing, educating and highlighting the historical contributions of Black people to society.

February 1st, 2023, marks the beginning of Black History Month with the theme “From Darkness to Light.” This theme aims to highlight the richness and diversity of Quebec’s Black communities as well as to encourage discussion and reflection among the population.

Still today, many workers are subject to racism in their workplace and in society. This is the reason why the SEU800 commits itself to fight against any kind of racism and participates in the FTQ’s awareness campaign called: For anti-racist unionism, without compromise. The objective of this campaign is to build a solid and inclusive labour movement. Thus, tools have been created to offer ways of reflection and action to become anti-racist trade unionists and unions.

Furthermore, at the last FTQ convention, the delegates unanimously recognized the existence of racism and systemic discrimination. It was therefore adopted by the delegates that the FTQ make representations to the government and that it commits to the organization of an awareness and training day on the subject.
