March 8th – The Womens’ Rights International Day

28 February 2022

The Womens’ Rights International Day finds its origin in the protests of women in Europe and United States in the beginning of the 20th century. During these protests, women were demanding better working conditions and the right to vote. The UNO officialised this day in 1977.

Today, this day is a privileged moment to celebrate womens’ victories. It is also a moment to look up to the future and continue fighting.

This year, the theme of the day is The future is feminist. Our future is feminist. It is made of the sum of our fights, battles and struggles. Because we are strong, determined and unshakable, we demand a feminist society that embodies our values. Going back, returning to “normal” and status quo cannot be considered. What we want is a society that unites our plural voices and that recognizes the intersectionality of oppressions; a society that finally meets our needs and respects the rights and dignity of all women. It is with confidence and hope that we commit ourselves to this other woven world of freedom, solidarity, justice, peace and equity.

More crisis will come. To deal with the urgency to act, the future must be feminist, inclusive and ecological, or it will not be. A feminist society: not a utopia, the solution.

At the SEU 800, we recognize the work of many women activists who, without counting their time, are mobilizing and fighting for better working conditions for women.

On this day, the SEU 800 invites you to watch the following activity:
The Collective March 8th, which brings together the union world and community, is organizing a political debate with the four principal parties where their representatives will debate the feminist issues: Joëlle Boutin (CAQ), Manon Massé (QS), Mégane Perry Mélançon (PQ) and Isabelle Melançon (PLQ). Three main themes will be addressed during the debate:

  • State services (public services, social programs, intersectional gender analysis ADS+)
  • The economic autonomy of women (poverty, minimum wages, work- family balance, promotion of traditionally female professions)

The physical and psychological well-being (housing, climatic crisis, violence against women).

The debate will be recorded for later broadcast on the social network of Collective March 8th. When the event is broadcast, it will be possible to view in its entirety or by subject blocks. We invite you to follow the Collective March 8th   and the group Condition feminine FTQ on Facebook.

The pin: symbol of feminist battles

By wearing the March 8th pin, we are stating that we are feminist and we are showing our will to keep fighting for equality and justice in solidarity with all women.

The Collective March 8th represents more than 700 000 women in Quebec from independent groups of women and union organizations.
